Raison d’être
I start a lot of things, I finish very few. I’m easily distracted. The thought of seeing something big through to its completion is sometimes daunting to me, and too often I can’t be bothered. Since blogs are never finished, I figured Unfinished Bits would be the perfect place to put the things I start and leave alone.
Unfinished Bits is my perpetual work in progress.
Let me explain the categories:
Story
I’ve started countless stories in my life, always full of intention, believing in the ideas I get from talking to friends, staring into a bong or strolling through Sandman’s land. Last Days is a story I started after talking to two friends about Judgment Day. I wrote a prologue introducing the characters. I’ll add what I have over time, and who knows, might continue now that I have a stage. Problem is, I don’t really know how to get where it’s going. The Wanderer is an 8-page comic book I started making for a friend’s birthday. As with so many things I set out to accomplish for friends, it took well past his birthday to be completed. At some point I scanned four pages and started colouring them with my impeccable Photoshop skills. Needless to say I never got around to doing that to the remaining four, but I’ve put the unfinished bits here. The story revolves around said friend and features a lot of cameos from places and people we know.
Text Message
I love sms’es. Some are just too good to be lost on broken phones or because of space limitations. They’re a great way of savouring the thoughts of a moment. Technically these don’t belong here, since they’re finished. But hey, it’s my blog and I want to put them up. If I didn’t write them myself I will let you know.
Neighbour
My neighbour (43) is a kind soul at heart who’s been made bitter by his experiences. He drinks a lot and spends most of his days participating in “Gewinnspiele”, competitions he finds in a dedicated magazine that guarantees a win if you participate in all of them. The magazine even featured his profile once, with a small interview in which he divulged his winning method of puncturing holes into postcards so they stand out. He always complains I don’t bring him enough cheese, but once I gave him a crate of Schlappeseppel as a token of good neigbourliness. He then spoke the prophecising words “Ich revanchiere mich!”. He has, a lot. And I’m sure he will even more in times to come.
Jack
Refers to Jack Kerouac, poster boy for spontaneous prose and the Beat Generation. Also author of On the Road. Sometimes I like to just write straight off the top of my head trying not to think. That’s harder than it sounds, and I usually only do very short bursts like you will find in this category. They don’t always make a whole lot of sense but that’s not the point. Unfinished Business School of Arts presents excerpts from a very personal something I wrote over the course of a beautiful summer during my hippie phase in university. It was when I discovered Kerouac and went through that whole inner search of self that takes place when young individuals have far too much time on their hands and methods of intoxication to experiment with. UBSoA got – for better or worse – finished, so I’m taking little pieces out of the diary and will disperse these through this site in chronological order.
Lyrics
No part of Unfinished Bits is lyrics-free, but this category holds poetry and the words to songs that never were. From the cathartic process of putting a broken heart into rhyme to the jolly verses of a happy drinker, Lyrics has you covered.
